Republicans find less spending religion NOW?

I am not sure about the stimulus package that was recently passed by the US govt with only 3 Republican supporters. I know we need to do something, but I am just not sure the government should try to spend us out of an economic hole - maybe the hole, and a little more accountability and self-reliance would do us good, in the long run (but yes be painful in the short term, relatively speaking), but I digress. We are getting the stimulus, like it or not. What really amazes me at this point is that the Republicans pick NOW to start worrying about fiscal responsibility? What about during the prescription drug debacle, or the Homeland Security Department debacle, or the Iraq War, or . . . . I could go on. At least spending the money ON THE STATES, on infrastructure and such, seems like a better plan than throwing it at pharma companies, false patriotic war profiteers, bombs and tanks for a "war" that has only made us weaker and more of target by even our own intelligence reporting standards, paying off laughing religious fanatics who agree to be our "allies," and so on. Oh but wait, we aren't stopping that spending just yet either, uh oh.

What a mess

You know when they first started talking about a stimulus package I was actually optimistic - there are things in the country we don't seem to have the discipline to conquer and this could have been the perfect opportunity. Our highway infrastructure is literally falling apart from disrepair, new sources of energy are desperately needed and this takes money. What a golden opportunity we had to do now what we ultimately will have to do down the road, while at the same time helping the economy today. Alas, we are just not able to make tough decisions in our country. Oh and one other thing - absurd talking points must be banned at some point. All this talk about socialism, socialism, socialism is disingenuous and very damaging on many levels. They know it's not true, but it fires up the base. They either don't see the dangerous ledge we are on in this country or don't care. What an embarrassment.

Amen to the socialism talk.

Amen to the socialism talk. I always wonder at what percentage it becomes "socialism" to those that label it that. A 2% or 3% more tax means "socialism?" Most people don't understand what socialism means though, of course, they just equate it with bigger government programs, rather than actual government control of the means of production (manufacturing, farming, etc), and all distribution, which no one in the Obama admin has ever even come close to advocating. Simple having state run construction projects for infrastructure or research isn't socialism, nor more than having an FBI or a state police is. It amazes me, I know many people who are big repubs (it's popular in the area where I live), and they are generally ignorant. I even know TEACHERS , FIREMEN, and POLICEMEN that like to whine about Obama and "socialism." Hello, McFly, first that's not really what it is, but if we accept even that nonsense, you still need to keep in mind that you actually work for a govt run industry that most people think functions pretty damn well.
