SproutCore

SproutCore, a Cocoa inspired Ajax framework that uses Ruby, is pretty impressive at first glance - and it's apparently Apple's choice for web apps.

I don't know much about it, but I still find it hard to believe that anyone is going to be able to compete with GWT (or more appropriately the GWT approach) in terms of ease of development, re-use capability, and performance.

Saw this at WWDC

I just happened to check out the SproutCore session at WWDC and came away impressed. In fact, I was IM'ing Cooper about it during the session. I haven't used GWT and therefore have no basis for comparison, but I was impressed by the high-level abstractions they use, as well as the aggressive use of modern browser features, particularly CSS transforms.

I've been looking at it for

I've been looking at it for the last couple of weeks and yep, it's slick and everything. Kind of like a super-deluxe version of Ruby on Rails (not being a huge RoR guy admittedly). But the bottom line is that now you're crafting your code in at least 2 syntaxes (Ruby and Javascript) and if you have anything interesting on the server, you're likely working in a third. You can't beat GWT in that area... I will say that Google should take a look at their visual style and their default look...it's quite stunning.

More SproutCore

Getting a LOT of press with the mac deal, also on a few podcasts: one that I find very informative for developer stuff, and one that I generally find very misinformed for developer stuff (but right on target for general mach tech journalism stuff) - you guess which is which (I haven't listened to either of these episodes yet, those judgements are based on past shows).
