About the site - Temple of the Screaming Penguin
Wondering what in the heck a "Screaming-Penguin" is, or what's a "Linux"? Most visitors here will be familiar with Linux and familiar with the TotSP (Temple of the Screaming Penguin) concept, but this explanation is for those who are a bit bewildered or curious right now.
Screaming-Penguin.com is a web site that was originally devoted to the free and open source operating system known as Linux, or GNU/Linux and to computing itself. In the days when TotSP was first founded (1997) it was a strong Linux advocacy site. Since then Linux itself has matured a great deal and been widely adopted. Thus the need for general Linux advocacy, Linux commentary and explanation of Linux itself has waned (we no longer need to explain something that is basically now ubiquitous in the computing world - at one time though, Linux was an outcast, and there were many naysayers).
Since its inception Screaming-Penguin.com has evolved into a "multi-personality" weblog with a focus on technology and technology related developments. This includes: open source software in general, open collaboration, specific software projects, and many tangents such as science, politics, humor, and anything else that entertains the contributors.
There are still many Linux advocates and Linux stories on Screaming-Penguin.com (those are our roots, and we still rely on the platform at our day jobs) but the amount of Linux related material is no longer dominant. Technology and software development in general are now more common topics.
If you're curious about the little mascot penguin there, that's Tux, the Linux mascot, and progenitor of our own mascot Jules
About Us
TotSP was founded by guy in a van down by the RIVER! That guy, and a few of his friends actually. We were all technology workers of one form or another (software developers, system administrators, and such) and we decided to build a web site that we could post content to from an online "admin" section and back it with a database - in 1997. Years later we learned that this was a "weblog," of sorts.
In the time since it's inception the site has changed, and grown, and so have the creators and contributors. Many of us have different careers and different circumstances now. Some of us are managing companies, some of us are still building software, some have written books, some are still in the van down by the river.
The major creators and contributors over the years have been:
- Charlie "Atrox" Collins
- Robert "Kebernet" Cooper
- Nathan "Jeepmutt" Jones
- Gregg "3G" Yedvarb
- Turner "Shmooze" Foster
- Cybrhippy
- Billy
