Every day I open up the letter to the editors and opinion page of the Atlanta Journal Constitution I get more scared. And more convinced that I just have to get out of the South.
For instance, today we have news of my county (Cherokee) having closed door meetings to put the ten commandments in the courthouse. *shiver* Fortunately the editors wrote against it, however, there is an opposing viewpoint from the Woodstock Baptist minister with quotes like:
-"Surely, even the most secular mind sees the benefit of the Ten Commandments in ordering society and helping mankind to live in harmony." No, I don't. I think we can achieve order without your silly magical sky daddy!
-"Surely even the most liberal of minds doesn't want someone stealing from him, lying to him, committing adultery with his wife or killing him." Wow, great strawman, fella! Of course I don't want that. That's why I own a really mean gun and depend on the laws of MAN, not god. God's not real good at enforcing his laws, anyways.
or my favorite
-"Even a hardened atheist with a logical, rational mind would have to conclude that those who strive to keep the Ten Commandments are an asset to the community, not a liability."
That last one made me laugh. Ya know, I don't care about a softened christian with an illogical, irrational mind going to church, my problem is when they try to use the FORCE OF GOVERNMENT to enforce their beliefs on me.
Ever since the Alabama judge case, municipalities all over the south are climbing all over themselves to become 'god-fearin' and prove that they, too, can become religous bullies.
Is there any place in the world where a logical, agnostic, libertarian person can live without having to suffer the idiots?

There is always Antarctica. Not too many people down there. Seriously though, I feel your pain. And I'd say that Southwest Virginia is just as bad in that regard as most all areas of Georgia outside I-285.
Re: I must get out of the South ASAP
You know, it always strikes me all the lessons from the Bible that evangelicals forget.. "Let he who is without sin...", "Shake the dust off your feet and go in peace..."
Its funny, though. I mentioned it in my Confederate flag post, but I read Zell's book recently and it really blows me away how backhanded he is. "The South" is there to take credit for all the modernity of Metro Atlanta, Miami and Nashville, but "The South" should also have their fundamentalist right tendencies played to, even though he takes credit when he can successfully move against those tendencies.
There really are two "Souths" now. There is Atlanta, which I admit I feel more and more connected too all the time, then there is Georgia. There is Miami, then there is the ticking implosive device known as Alabama. I have spent almost all my life in the South, and I guess I like "my South", but there is plenty out there to really make you cringe.
I hear Toronto is really nice.
Re: I must get out of the South ASAP
i agree with the fact that this south is ridiculous because of religious zealotry but its being fed by the current administration and faith based initiatives and so on.
therefore this is nationwide baby, thanks in large part to W.
now its not the fault of W that each of these specific incidents is occuring, but his administration has created an atmosphere where these people feel like they can get away with this type of behavior. so W does get at least some of the credit here.
i also want to point out how ignorant and incorrect it is to want religious symbols or religious ANYTHING in ANY public function/forum, etc. what i mean is that separation of church and state is of paramount importance, freedom and discrimination level importance, and those that do not recognize that, REGARDLESS OF HOW RELIGIOUS ONE MAY BE, are completely off base.
your article you state "cant an agnostic" go anywhere, well the same goes for an atheist or a CHRISTIAN, MUSLIM, BUDHHIST, JEW, WHATEVER. even religious people should ADAMANTLY OPPOSE this. to transpose the issue and trample over logic and say "well, der, umm aint them thar 10 commandments good nuff for ya" is stupidity. its NOT ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (which is another argument), its NOT ABOUT RELIGION, its about constitutionality, freedom, the foundation of this nation and so on. all of which CLEARLY AND RIGHTLY delineate SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
all over georgia dumbass counties are just pissing away money because they are ignorant and arrogant. these will ALL go to court and ALL lose. so if your county is in this mess (mine is not, yet) go to the council meetings and explain that regardless of religious fervor or whatever else, its just a waste of money to do this as each will be sued and struck down.
tell em to buy some PRIVATE land via a trust or something and put up shitloads of commandments on that, dont stop at ten dammit, let em fly, on PRIVATE property.
also, join americans united (every time another county puts up the commandments i give AU 25 bucks, getting expensive lately).
