While I am almost loathe to respond to this...
First off, the insurgency/occupation in BSG is much more an amalgam of several different scenarios; Vichy France features prominently as does the Palestinian territory and, of course, Iraq.
I would highly recommend you go back and watch the first season and the last 2 seasons of Star Trek Deep Space Nine: another place Ron Moore called home. This show delt with many of the same issues: what is the nature of terrorism, the nature of occupations, the lines between right and wrong for freedom fighters. Hell, "terrorist" wasn't even a "bad word" in the time of DS9.
But really, after the last two seasons, to somehow be stunned that *gasp* Sci-Fi explores social issues seems a bit light. Moore has always been fair to almost all the issues, moving the moral crises and failings around both the "good guys" and the "bad guys." For crying out loud, it took, what 6 weeks to pass from Abu Graib before there was a prisoner torture episode running?
Honestly, if there are Americans (ok, I have little doubt that there are) that aren't already uncomfortable with the fact that we are in a long term occupation of another country at all, I doubt they are really going to be swayed by BSG.
And please note there is no colon in the title of the damned show.
