Ok. I know I may be one of the few people who care about this, but This is a good thing IMHO. As someone who plays more than my fair share of video games, the use of gay, faggot and other homosexual labels and epithets as generic derrogotories bothers the hell out of me. I am straight, but still seems akin to niggardly, pollack or any other "generic" slader from days gone by. Personally, I think this kids parents should beat some damned sense into him first. I realize there is a line here for speech in schools, and I do believe in freedom of speech for students. It bothers the hell out of me, though, how we continue to allow a nomnative for a group of people -- any group of people -- to be used in common lexicon as a generic derrogotory. The level at which I see this in the online gaming culture, dominated by the mid-late teen set, is really appauling. I would like to officially start a campaign to teach our youth not to use homophobic epithets. I call it the "Gamers for Motherfucker, Not Faggot." Ill get some bumperstickers made.

while i applaud your efforts at defending homosexuals because i totally agree that all people regardless of sexual orientation have every right to not be discriminated against and not be harrassed, i think the suspension of this kid is misguided and that he wasnt picking on anyone in particular. i think this is taking things too far to suspend him. the word "gay" is used as a deragatory term in the sense that it means "not right", "bad", etc, and this interpretation obviously has its derivation as a slur against homosexuals, yes I agree with that, but i think this is an overreaction. do they suspend every kid that says a bad word nowadays. and this bad word is sort of on the fringe of bad words you must admit. yes its deragory, yes its in bad taste, but come on. dont get me wrong here, i am not personally homosexual but i am the first to defend homesexual rights. its about the rights of people in general, seeing people as people regardless of their race, religion, the type of sex they have, the car they drive, how much money they make, etc. its totally insance to me to discriminate against someone for the type of sex they prefer to have. i find that thinking totally flawed and those that state being homosexual as wrong as being simply ignorant biggoted stupid fucks. to me that demonstrates not only a mindset of a person not capable of truth or logic, but so blinded by their preconceptions and indoctrinations (normally religious in nature) that all of their thinking should be suspect. think of what people whom are opposed to homosexuality are saying, "we think the way you have sex is wrong and should not be allowed" and they usually add "god says its wrong, its in the bible". that is almost the epitome of ignorance and stupidity. yet when it comes to the issue of using the word "gay" or "homo" or "fag" or whatever by a school boy on a playground in a deragatory way that should not be encouraged by any means, but it should also not be overreacted to. this is again an insensitive use of the word, but is there a list somewhere of what non profane words the kid can and cant say? can he say fatass, can he say jackass, can he say mother _fucker_, can he say stupid head? those are all deragatory to somebody somewhere at some time. these expletives and terms ALL have origins in some deragatory crap. i dont know, i see your point in that it is deragatory, just seems like way overboard to me to suspend him.

Well, first I would say "****" is not an incommon word on a playground of 12 and 13 year olds :P I guess my point would simply be, every where you hear someone use faggot or gay replace that with your favorite "nigger" derivative and see if you still think it is appropriate. And I am certainly not naive enough to think that the pubescent playground it going to be the ideal realm of social acceptance, however, it bothers me that I see a handfull of adults that talk this way. Even moreso, it bothers me that we aren't even giving our youth a slap on the wrist. Personally, I would much rather hear "jackass" on the playground than "faggot". I haven't heard of any drunk teenagers beating equines with bats on a friday night.

I agree with you on this one, atrox. Overreaction and political correctness run amok. Of course, I think any political correctness is bad. I, for one, was really upset to see the use of the word 'retarded' relegated to PC no-no land. Now I have to call the stupid college football refs "specially abled" or some other crap. Besides, maybe the boy really meant that the call was actually 'Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry'.

What's wrong with making an example out of someone? That's the necessary complication of the road we've embarked upon - once you start giving people rights and legitimacy then you obligate yourself to protect and defend that identity. Although saying that, this weekend I was down in Clearwater having a conversation with a woman who is an assistant principal for 6th graders and she was telling about her year - suspend kid for brining an 11" knife to school, suspend girl for allowing boy to 'go down on her' on the bus, arrest 3 girls for jumping the security officer in the lunchroom trying to get his gun.... School today ain't what it used to be.

dont get me wrong, i dont at all think its "appropriate" but i also dont think it warrants suspension. lets take the nigger word, i actually hear that word rather often nowadays, of course its black people that i hear saying it, but still its quite common. i find it inappropriate when they say it, i find it inappropriate when white people say it, but in either case if it were a kid on a playground of either color i would explain to him its inappropriate. if it CONTINUES to happen maybe then i would send him to the principal. but all in all, even with nigger, i think its a word and unless something else is present, some pattern of abusing that word, etc, its doesnt warrant suspension.

Do you realize that the word motherf*cker is also deragatory in nature to women?! Replacing one insult of epithetical nature with another is no better.
