Nature: "Search Engines Suck"

The scient journal Nature this month has published an article examinining the indexing power of search engines on the net. The result: not very much. Here are some interesting bits: In Feb-1999 the web had ~800 million pages, up from ~300 million the previous year. Combined, all the major search engines covered about 42% of the web, down from 60% a year earlier.Here's the breakdown of the individual engines: Northern Light 16.0% Alta Vista 15.5% Snap 15.5% HotBot 11.3% Search.MSN.COM 8.5% Infoseek 8.0% Google 7.8% Yahoo! 7.4% Excite 5.6% Lycos 2.5% EuroSeek 2.2%
