BeOS hit a single to left field today with an impressive agreement with Fujitsu that will bring dual-boot systems preconfigured with Windows and BeOS for sale throughout Europe. Hitachi had previously sold computers which booted to BeOS by using a boot disk. The Fujitsu machines will present the user with a choice of operating systems every time the machine starts up. IBM has begun providing servers preconfigured with Linux. Will they extend this to the desktop? Not a chance right now! The major complaint from IBM is that there arent enough applications to make the operating system worthwhile. IBM currently believes that Linux is mainly useful now for small web servers. Occleshaw, an IBM spokesperson with little intelligence and a stupid name (oops! ignore Ad Hominem comment), insists that "No one runs large, million-hits-per-day Web sites on Linux," adding that IBM would still recommend its AIX Unix-based server to customers that wanted to run large, serious enterprise applications. I am going to try and ignore that statement because I understand that IBM is trying to support Linux but they obviously have to plug their own products. Occleslop did go on to boast that Linux was the number 1 os for web sites. He also stated that IBM was taking a "wait-and-see" attitude towards Linux on the desktop, meaning they will regularly revisit the idea as Linux becomes more mainstream.
