Dennis Miller moves his show to MSNBC: CNN

You read that right, the Dennis Miller HBO show is moving to MSNBC. They say its a new show, different altogether, political, and Dennis says "I want it to be a pretty reasoned discourse". The format, well what else: The show will feature interviews, a rant on a selected topic, a "Weekend Update"-like comic newscast and a pundit panel he calls "The Varsity." That and a monkey for good measure. Now I have been a big Dennis Miller fan in the past but I think this is pretty strange. And I dont disagree with most of Dennis' politics. I am not a Bush fan as he is, but I consider myself to be somewhat fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and I *think* thats somewhere around where he is. Also I was one of his only fans when he was on Monday Night Football (even though the combo of him and Dan Fouts was less than dynamic). If this is intended to be comedy or at least just not taken seriously then I can accept that. But in that case its pretty strange to be on MSNBC which calls itself "One of the most honored news organizations" (taken from the about page on their website). Miller says he is a big Bush fan and wont pick on him. That and one of the producers is Mike Murphy a "GOP consultant". Seems a bit inappropriate be on a "news" channel much less an honored one? Now this would go great on Fox which is all made up "Fair and Balanced" stuff and features other non journalism figures such as Bill O'Lielly as well, but on any serious news channel? I also think its a strange move for Dennis to make. Maybe he just doesnt care about his entertainment career anymore and wants to get serious? Is so then this might be alright, but if not and he wants to continue to entertain then I think this might hurt his entertainment career by alienating him from some people who do not agree with his views. Of course he has always had strong views but he was not at the pulpit of a new s desk purporting to run a news type show? For more see the linked CNN article. This may be actually one news show that I will watch. I've been reading a bit about it and saw an interview with, uh, Letterman or Leno I think, where he spoke about it. I thought it was on CNBC, but hell, I can't tell them apart. Anyways, I would probably characterize Miller as more of a right-leaning libertarian than anything. He only started supporting Bush after 9/11 and has become a huge supporter of security, fighting terrrorism, etc etc. I still think he is a small government type, socially liberal and will, undoubtedly, lampoon/lambast any politician, Dem or Rep, who does something stupid. Which of course includes all politicians. He has an add that is funny - at the end he says to watch it or he might go back to football.

I am not surprised, but I am pleased. Dennis Miller is not swayed by popular opinion. He believes in himself. He has the guts to follow his heart. For many of the same reasons, I like George Bush as well. I too am not embarassed not afraid. Bravo, Dennis. Thanks Atrox, for filling us in.

Yeah I have to say that picking on MSNBC for being a "news" channel may have been misguided. I am confused that they call themselves a news channel but if its entertainment then fine. I say this because last night I saw that miller was flanked by "The Apprentice" on MSNBC so they surely arent just news eh?

Miller's politics always had some right-wing stuff in it, but his startling conversion to Republican stooge is clearly the result of becoming bought-and-paid-for. He actually said that on his new show he will "give a pass" to that piety-mouthing fraud in the White House. I have never heard of any comedian "giving a pass" to anybody, much less of any sane adult with a spine saying that he agrees with and supports a political leader in advance of knowing what they are going to say or do. This sort of adoring fealty is praiseworthy in canines, but not for men...or even whatever sort of creature Dennis Miller has become. I don't think that Miller should committ suicide in a fit of justified self-loathing, but he shouldn't rule it out without giving it some thought.

Dennis Miller without the "F" word? What are you f&^%$ing kidding me? That's like taking the brush right our of Picasso's hand and giving him an etch a sketch. The hour long format sucks. Too much filler. I LOVE Dennis and always have, but the Varsity panel thing is a drag. I long for the days of the HBO half hour that was tight, hot and nasty. (The way some things are best enjoyed.) Frankly, I think Jon Stewart is seriously kicking Miller's ass in the comedy Dept. and THAT is where the hippest, funniest political humor resides nowadays. Have always found Dennis entertaining since his SNL days, and am glad he has moved from HBO so I can follow him again. But am sorry to see he has morphed into a shrill for the idiot, unworthy and unelected president we are cursed with. Guess he realizes one has to suck up to the far right these days to have ratings that keep you on the tube. Oh well , a guy has to make a living ,so I'll forgive him that and keep watching.

I wouldn't patronize such a brilliant performer by suggesting that he has found his niche, but I sure as hell hope an audience is finding him. As a commentator-with-an-edge, I wonder if the guy has any peers. I get a twisted pleasure along with the threat of a significant dose of supplied-angst from watching him work. I put him up there with Thompson and O'Rourke and, if we want to toss in the possibility of a little boyish charm, Dave Barry. The difference is that Dennis is working on the fly - he's improvising... and in a lot of keys. If I don't catch the show at 7:00, I'm there for the 10;00 PM rerun. This is screwing up my evenings. Fortunately, my wife is diggin' him, too - for those and whatever other reasons. Way to be.... "Denny"! [%sig%]
