2002 was second hottest year on record: BBC

I know the global warming crap is a hoax and all that, yadda yadda yadda, but the BBC and many scientists still arent up to speed like you and I are (wink wink). They seem to think 2002 was hot! The second hottest on record in fact. So what was the hottest year ever? No not the year you graduated high school, for temperature hot it was 1998. For more check out the linked BBC article.   World warming in 2002 "near record": BBC

While I certainly think that our actions have an effect on global warming, lets put some perspective on that BBC article. The earliest known thermometer was invented in 1714 (http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blthermometer.htm). Most scientists agree that the earth is around 4.5 billion years old. This means that we have a sample set that encompasses .00000642% of the total set (and this is a liberal estimate, considering we probably didn't officially record any real temperatures in 1714). I think any statistician would agree that it is absolutely impossible to infer anything signifigant from this. How do we know that this isn't just some circadean pattern that happens every, say, 100,000 years? I'm not saying that global warming is a crap theory, in fact I probably think we are having a very real effect on the earth. But surely the question is so complicated that one should not be satisfied by simply observing a higher-than-normal temperature. [%sig%]

well all that may be mr math and logic, but us tree huggers know its simple, its the damn arctic wildlife refuge oil consuming water polluting arsenic laden asbestos diesel trucks!

come on man, i will give up french fries, then can i stay?

Re: 2002 was second hottest year on record: BBC

Yes, that and your hippie "save the precious earth" whining...I suppose that would do.

Re: 2002 was second hottest year on record: BBC

Well, there are a lot of ways to get average termerature during a timeframe other than a thermometer too. Redwood ring samples, arctic ice core samples, etc also can tell you what the average climate was over the course of a year too.

Re: 2002 was second hottest year on record: BBC

on another even more complicated throw some extra junk into the equation note, i read in sciam this month that there is a theory and at least some partial evidence that the planet goes through warming and cooling trends based on "interstellar matter" and how it relates to the solar wind. i dont recall the details but the just was that the cycles of the solar system, including extra solar (out of our system) related cycles may be related to our climate.
