Share a file, go to jail: Wired

Amazing the stuff that the US congress can come up, very bright bunch up there (in the last 3 or 4 sessions especially). There is an article on Wired about a new proposal by Texas Rep John Carter to jail file swappers for 3 years. Carters logic is that A.)they can prosecute this crap and B.)it will be a deterrent. Uh, Ok, good thinking congressman. That and I bet there is porn on the Internet huh, lets ban that because that will work. Or even lets make an Internet sales tax, that will also work, all great ideas. Also all very worthy of the time of Congresspeople right now in light of all the other world events. If we can just get a handle on this Internet thing and maybe fix prayer in school and then dont let those bastards burn the flag, then we will have really accomplished something.

Yeah, this is silly. Aren't there already laws on the books that could be used to prosecute this? And if so, why aren't they being enforced? I'm guessing because it is darn difficult to do it! I'm not arguing that people who do this are not committing a crime, my question is the severity of punishment, etc. I mean, 3 years for downloading "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears? C'mon. Record companies don't actually expect a 31 year old man to actually go somewhere and buy this stuff, do they? Um, not that I download Britney Spears or nothin'....

Re: Share a file, go to jail: Wired
