A high level look at RedHat 7.0 (Pinstripe)

Improved Installation, Configuration, desktops and more. Thus far it sounds like a great upgrade for less technically inclined users but not very significant for those already running the latest kernel and updated utilities(the kernel, SSH and OpenLDAP all mentioned as the major points in the linked NWFusion story.). (Dont get me wrong the 2.4 kernel and several software updates are substantial, but they can be be upgraded individually, see the Kernel notes link for kernel details.)
Also RedHat is considering shipping 7.0 with upgraded peripheral software BEFORE the kernel 2.4 release date so that they can get the 7.0 out there. Then they propose retro-fitting all the users and changing the 7.0 distro when the new kernel is available. Makes sense, but it again illustrates that the new 7.0 is more like 6.3 than a whole new rev.
Of course this IS good news, Linux needs some ease of use injected to increase availability to more users (and gain confidence, especially in corporate sectors.)
While Pinstripe is a marked improvement and many new things will be added, it is generally just an update for many Linux oriented packages (personally, while many hard core Linux users are not big RedHat fans, I am, and I will buy it just to support RedHat but I am not overwhelmed by the new 7.0 title.)
All of these thoughts come directly from reading the reviews of what 7.0 will contain and the new kernel notes. If you are really interested, RedHat does have 7.0 BETA available on the FTP sites. Red Hat boosts Linux security: NWFusion
