Network Computing Awards - Linux Wins BEST NOS

The Network Computing Awards are due out May 17. However, the results are already in and Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 wins BEST Network Operating System (we here at TOTSP dont always put a lot of faith in awards, but these are more than favorable to Linux, they appear fair all around, which is unusual) There are several categories on the list including NOS, ISP, Directory Services, Log Analysis and more (and a few weird ones like IP Addr Mgmt Tool), all very interesting. OpenLinux wins BEST NOS and Novell Netware 5 and Sun Solaris come in close second. I havent used OpenLinux but I will check it out, it apparently has some nice integration with Novell NDS along with the other positive Linux features. One thing I dont get is that many reviews or comparisons of Linux include a bit on Samba. Dont get me wrong Samba rules, I love it, I use it. Linux IS faster than NT at SMB file serving (it beats NT hands down at its own game), but Samba isnt Linux, its SMB for Linux. I dont know how NFS, Samba and NCPFS stack up against each other, but NFS is really the more native file serving-sharing environment for Linux and Unix. I would be very interested to see how NFS on Linux stacks up to NT and SMB (a project for ya.) And for that matter how the various Linux file serving utilities compare to each other, whatever wins the amazing thing is that Linux is capable of NT like SMB, Novell like NCP and Unix like NFS both serving and as a client, out of the box, for FREE! Add up that and several thousand other Linux features and it cant be beat, awards or not.
